Penn State has a strong and dedicated group of faculty engaged in research on texts by American women writers. Its ranks boast specialists in the works of American women writers as diverse as Kay Boyle, Toni Morrison, Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker, Hannah Webster Foster, Annis Boudinot Stockton, Djuna Barnes, Marianne Moore, Harriet Monroe, Phillis Wheatley, Edith Wharton, and Bobbie Ann Mason. In 1998, several members of the Penn State faculty came together to form the American Women Writers Workshop. The workshop serves as a meeting ground for faculty and graduate students committed to the study of American women writers. The AWWW brings speakers to campus to promote intellectual exchange about texts by American women writers, provides opportunities for graduate students and faculty engaged in the study of American women writers to share their work, and creates networking opportunities for graduate students who make texts by American women central to their research. Faculty members of the AWWW work hard to mentor graduate students and generate professional opportunities for them as scholars, teachers, and writers.
